Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA)
Last week, Printing Industries and its allies in the book printing industry met with Commissioners and technical experts at the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to present data supporting the industry's request to exempt children's books and other printed material from the new lead and phthalate testing and certification requirements of the CPSIA. As a follow-up, Monday the CPSC issued a letter outlining additional data and feedback the industry must provide in making the case for such an exemption. Efforts to provide a swift and thorough response are underway. As the February 10th deadline for compliance nears, Printing Industries has released guidelines on, "What Printers Should Do to Comply with the CPSIA." Also this week, a webinar was held to further educate member companies on the issue. If you have questions please contact Gary Jones, Director of Environmental Health and Safety, gjones@printing.org. For more on this issue, visit www.printing.org's CPSC page.
Thank you to everyone who has already sent a message to the CPSC or Capitol Hill, a total of 295 messages have been sent. Kudos to printers from Michigan who have sent 122 message to their lawmakers and the CPSC.
